Learn More About the All-New 2027 Ford F-150 Lightning near Damascus, GA

If you have noticed the absence of the F-150 Lightning from the new Ford truck lineup, don't worry: the electrified truck is making a comeback. After suspending production on the fully electric F-150 Lightning for the 2026 model year, Ford is bringing back the pickup for the 2027 model year. The F-150 Lightning is not just returning as it was before; it is now a plug-in hybrid. Keep reading to learn more about the 2027 Ford F-150 Lightning, coming soon to Franklin's Spring Creek Ford in Colquitt, GA.

What's New for the 2027 Ford F-150 Lightning?

The 2027 Ford F-150 Lightning is brand-new, and nearly everything about it has been updated aside from the name. Gone is the fully electric powertrain. It has been replaced with a brand-new extended-range plug-in hybrid engine. We do not yet know the specs of the 2027 F-150 Lightning hybrid powertrain, but Ford expects that it will have a driving range of a jaw-dropping 700-plus miles. Long driving ranges are a significant perk of plug-in hybrid vehicles, and that number would put the F-150 Lightning near the top of the range rankings of any truck.

What is a Plug-in Hybrid Engine?

The addition of a plug-in hybrid model is a first for the Ford truck lineup. While the Ford F-150 and Maverick precede the 2027 F-150 Lightning as hybrid trucks, both of those models feature standard hybrid engines. If you want to know more about the differences between hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric powertrains, keep reading:

  • Regular Hybrid: Regular hybrid vehicles add an electric motor to a gas engine to increase their fuel efficiency. The motor gets power from a battery that charges as you drive via regenerative braking. Because the battery charges as you drive, you don't have to plug in the vehicle to recharge. Just fill up the tank with gasoline. Examples of regular hybrid vehicles include the Ford Maverick Hybrid and Ford F-150 Full Hybrid.
  • Plug-in Hybrid: A plug-in hybrid vehicle has the same basic setup as a regular hybrid, only with a larger battery and a more powerful electric motor. Plug-in hybrid models often see a significant boost in power and fuel economy compared to equivalent regular hybrid or gas-only engines. They are also capable of driving short distances using only electricity. While plug-in hybrid vehicles often have regenerative braking to increase driving range, their batteries still require more power to remain charged. That means that plug-in hybrids need to be refueled both at the gas pump and at the charging station. The Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid is an example of a plug-in hybrid vehicle.
  • Fully Electric: Fully electric vehicles don't have a combustion engine at all. They use an electric motor powered by a battery to produce power. To recharge an EV, you just plug it in. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is an example of a fully electric vehicle.

2027 Ford F-150 Lightning Design

Ford has not yet released any images of the 2027 F-150 Lightning, so we can't yet tell you with certainty how it will look on the roads of Blakely, GA. Given that it bears the F-150 nameplate, you can expect the next F-150 Lightning to bear a strong resemblance to Ford's most popular truck, while likely getting some distinct exterior design elements. One change that we can be sure of is the return of a functional grille. Like all fully electric vehicles, the previous F-150 Lightning doesn't have an engine, so its grille is completely cosmetic. If you want your truck with a large, impressive, and functional grille, expect the 2027 F-150 Lightning to deliver.

Interior and Technology

Ford has not yet announced the 2027 F-150 Lightning technology features. At a minimum, you can expect the truck to have at least a 12-inch display, the same one that came standard with the 2025 F-150 Lightning and that still comes standard with the gas-engine F-150 that many Donalsonville, GA, drivers enjoy. We might also see an available 13.2-inch touchscreen (found on the Ford Expedition) or even a 15-inch display (available with the 2025 F-150 Lightning).

The return of a combustion engine means the F-150 loses the front trunk. We will see if Ford updates the interior to account for this change. We're also curious to see if the 2027 F-150 Lightning offers multiple truck bed sizes, or if it follows the 2025 model with a single 5.5-foot bed.

Trim Levels

Ford has not yet announced the official trim level list or the pricing for the 2027 F-150 Lightning.

Color Options

Ford has not yet announced the paint color options for the 2027 Ford F-150 Lightning.
