The mid-size SUV market has been growing larger in the past 10 years, but full-size SUVs are still a smart fit for families looking for plenty of passenger room, cargo space, and towing capacity-features that the midsize segment can't quite match. Let's compare two of the top players in this market - the 2019 Ford Expedition and the 2019 Toyota Sequoia - and see which one takes top of the class.

Performance and Power

The 2019 Toyota Sequoia offers a powerful single 5.7L V8 engine that cranks out 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque with a max towing capacity of 7,400 lbs. Because of its powerful output, it pushes city mileage a bit lower for the market at only 13 mpg/city and 17 mpg/hwy.

The 2019 Ford Expedition offers two engine options: a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 with 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque and a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 (on the platinum trim) that produces 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Both engines offer a max towing capacity of 9,300 lbs., almost 2,000 more lbs. than the Sequoia offers. Amazingly, the towing capacity and larger engine don't make a dent in the gas mileage. At 17 mpg/city and 24 mpg/hwy, the Ford Expedition leaves the gas-guzzling Sequoia in the stone ages.

Interior, Tech, and Safety

While the Toyota Sequoia offers plenty of space on its 120-inch wheelbase, the Expedition uses its comparable 120.5 inches more efficiently, with increased head and leg room and plenty of available cargo room. In fact, Motortrend called the Ford Expedition the "new benchmark for the full-size SUV class" because of its "performance, comfort, utility, and tech."

Both SUVs offer 8 seats, but the trim in the Expedition tends to feel more luxurious than the Toyota's interior. Both top trim packages offer exciting tech features and conveniences including premium audio systems, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, navigation, Alexa and Waze compatibility, fully adjustable driver's seats and push-to-start engines. However, the Expedition outpaces the Toyota with its 8-inch display interface. The Sequoia's 4.2-inch interface isn't easy to use and makes navigating the controls more difficult than other vehicles on the market, outdating it compared to the competition.

Both the Sequoia and the Expedition offer a full suite of safety features, but only the Expedition has been given a 5-star safety rating by the NHTSA.
